"Great job finding creative solutions everybody!" Alabaster says, wagging his tail, during this game he's been generous but fair with his players, wanting to give everyone a very fun first game.  With everyone finally making it inside the castle, Alabaster takes a moment to set a new playmat on the table, most of it obscured with pieces of black construction player placed over the top of the map.

Chapter 4 - The Halls

The interior of the castle is dark and musty, there are a few adventurers with spells or torches to cast some light, but also plenty of adventurers who can see well enough in the dark that creep forward down the various hallways. As the adventurers start to explore, they notice that the hallways twist and turn, and each one is unique even though they are interconnected. Which hallway will your character take?

Select a "random" hallway below (or roll a six sided dice at home for your choice!) and reply below with how your character navigates the challenges ahead!

  1. As you're walking down this hallway, you start to feel disoriented, the shadows begin to flicker on the walls, forming frightening shapes, some sort of magic must be afoot! Can your character shake these scary feelings?
  2. This hallway seems to go on and on forever, and your character can't seem to find the end, no matter how far they go. There's gotta be some trick to this, how do they figure it out?
  3. This hallway seems still, too still... and your character realizes why pretty quickly, the hallway is laden with traps! How do they navigate past the various trip wires and other hidden pitfalls?
  4. As you head down this hallway, the going is fairly easy, though after walking a long time, the path is barred by a pile of rubble. How does your character get through?
  5. After travelling down this hallway for a bit, your character comes face to face with a locked door, on the walls on either side, there are various drawings and words, certainly there must be a clue among them..
  6. As you head down this hallway, it starts getting darker and darker, until you find yourself in complete darkness. How does your character continue on?

Rolled a 4!

Snowstorm stopped right in her tracks when she saw the pile. Even though her team had split up to look for which winding pathway would lead them to the treasure, she ended up being the one to end up nose-to-nose with a dead end.
But... it couldn't be just a dead end, right? Snowflake was able to find a way in just from a dead end before, maybe the same was going on here! She starts to carefully poke around the rubble, seeing if there's any way through.

Snowstorm is rolling Nose to try seeing if there's any way she could get past!

The pile of rubble sits before her...

Snowstorm rolls a 19 +0, for a total of 19, succeeding!

A Snowtorm inspects the pile of rubble, her investigation causes some of the smaller pieces of dirt to shift, falling to the floor. The pile is pretty big, but it looks like it can be dug out!

Snowstorm starts to dig a bit, and the digging comes easy! There are some larger pieces of rubble thats slightly hard to shift, and she has to put her muscles into it, but soon enough a hole forms big enough for her to fit through!

Going back in time a bit... Snowstorm rolls a 5!

After getting through the rubble, Snowstorm finds herself nose-to-nose with what appears to be a puzzle. She starts trying to decipher it... is it telling her to ask politely to enter? That's a pretty common theme for door puzzles.
Hoping her calculations were right, she stands up straight in front of the door, smiles, and knocks. "Could I come in, please?"

Snowstorm is rolling Tail for politeness!

Raine at the table rolls a 2...
-
She found herself farther down the tunnel now, and seemingly the party that had followed her lost behind her some ways. "Drat, what am I missing here...? This can't just keep going." Raine stopped herself in the long hallway and peered through the gloom, "A bit more light would help me." She pulls out from a small wallet a bit of tinder, and realizes she's forgotten her steel. With just her short dagger at her side, she begins to strike it against a rock over her tinder, hoping it will spark and give her some needed torchlight to navigate the long hallway and pick out the assured switch that's hiding on the walls.

She rolls, using her Paws stat, to determine if she can get this fire started, passed onto her torch, and with that hopefully a switch found on the walls to get her out of this hallway!

The hallway's darkness looms around her...

Raine rolls an 8 +5, for a total of 13, succeeding!

But even without her typical tools, she's able to create a spark, and a then a small fire, lighting her torch. The light emanates out from her, though far down the hallway is still intimidatingly dark.

Raine takes a moment to get her bearings, examining the walls on either side of her for the time being. As she runs her paw over the stone wall to her right, she notices something right away.... that this section of the wall is an illusion!

Raine, surprised at the sudden realization, is particularly thankful that she was able to get things going with the light.

"Hello- everyone, there's a section of the wall that's an illusion!" she calls out in her loudest voice, realizing only too late she maybe shouldn't have yelled out... but not getting a response either.

She pressed into the faux wall and it gave way, allowing her passage further in, torch illuminating her new exit.

Fearful that something is looming farther down and was alerted by her yell, she rolls using her Nose stat to promise a safe entry into the new location. She's ready to speed away, but without perceiving the area just right she's in for a possible surprise if she's unlucky. Her dagger is at the ready.

[Jasper gripped a pink-striped dice in his paw, rattled it around briefly, and let it fly to the table. After looking at the list of options, he looked pleasantly surprised at his number 5.]

After the rumbling of the castle had ceased, Jasper noticed that he was no longer as tired! He quickly glided down to the ground using his excitement-rested wings, and looked around for the rest of the party.

They were standing in front of the now-revealed entrance to the castle! The lever had worked! Actually -- it seemed that several hidden levers and switches had revealed entrances to the castle. But this one? He had found it all on his own! He was definitely proving his worth -- and right to his share of the treasure!

------

The inside of the castle was dusty and dark; evidently the beast didn't use the hallways ("Tunnels?" thought Jasper to himself) to its advantage. Did that mean the beast had chased away previous inhabitants and then didn't even bother to use all the open space?

He was shaken from his thoughts when the group leader pointed out there were too many hallways to justify staying in one large group. They'd have to split up and find their way to the beast alone, or in small groups! Jasper quickly volunteered to go by himself. He wasn't the best at seeing in the dark, but he was eager to have some space to think and calculate what he'd do with his share of the treasure once they finally completed their quest.

He picked a hallway seemingly at random (though he would later insist it was because it was slightly less dark than the others), and grabbed a still-burning torch off the wall to light his way. The hallway was long and winding, and he thought he even backtracked at points -- but everything looked similar anyways, so he wasn't sure. Until...! There! He saw something up ahead through the gloom!

Excitement turned to confusion when his torch light first hit the walls. There were a lot of strange runes, words, and pictures surrounding a simple wooden door. He immediately looked for a handle but couldn't find one, and pushing on the door yielded a similar failure. Was there a way through?

Perhaps the way to get in the door was written around it...

He briefly studied the markings, but his paw keep inching towards the pouch slung on his back. He just couldn't focus on all these confusing symbols and words...

His paw touched the bone ocarina still tucked safely away, and inspiration struck!

[Jasper would like to roll Nose for Perception -- he would like to play his ocarina and see if anything happens to the markings on the wall!]

At first, Jasper can't make heads or tails of the strange markings...

Jasper rolls a 20 + 3, for a total of 23, succeeding!

But as soon as he begins to play the ocarina, some of the markings on the wall start to glow, Jasper noticed right away that the markings were leading his eyes in a certain direction, following the markings, Jasper finds a loose stone near the floor.

Jasper is able to pry the stone from the wall, revealing a small alcove with a hidden key inside!

Gasha doesn't need any help to see mostly well in the dark. Well, she can't really see well, but you will catch her dead before catching her asking for help. So she just picked a random corridor and went blindly in it.

She rolled a 3: This hallway seems still, too still... and your character realizes why pretty quickly, the hallway is laden with traps! How do they navigate past the various trip wires and other hidden pitfalls?

Gasha steps on a trap, opening a hidden pitfall. She took flight, avoiding falling. However she actived another trap with her flight, missing an arrow by inches.

"Well, what if I fly like really fast? Can I outrun the traps?" Instead of waiting for any answer, she started flying faster, trying to outrun her traps.

Gasha wants to use Paws stat to outrun/outfly the traps.......

Thank you!!

The traps start going off at a rapid pace as Gasha sets them off..

Gasha rolls a an 18 +3, for a total of 21, succeeding!

But she's able to dodge them as they go off, with her quick reaction speed. Its a gauntlet, but Gasha manages to dodge all sorts of arrows, rock traps, pitfalls, and even a flamethrower!

After what seems like an eternity, Gasha finally clears all the trap hallway, leaving a trail of destruction behind her...

Feeling victorius and invencible, Gasha keeps going blindly to the nex hallway, not really caring for which way she was going. Nothing could stop her!

Rolled a 2: This hallway seems to go on and on forever, and your character can't seem to find the end, no matter how far they go. There's gotta be some trick to this, how do they figure it out?

Gasha keeps going and going and going. Something is not right, she decided after way too much time. If the hallway was endless, maybe if she managed to destroy one of the walls it would show a new shorter path.

Gasha wants to roll to destroy one of the walls using her Teeth stat, please! Thank you!!

Rolled a 1: As you're walking down this hallway, you start to feel disoriented, the shadows begin to flicker on the walls, forming frightening shapes, some sort of magic must be afoot! Can your character shake these scary feelings?

Mochius isn't crazy about the idea of splitting up, but the castle is huge and their party is only so big. They all nod and head their separate ways after someone suggests, though Mochius stands frozen in spot for a moment. Finally, she looks around. Her companions have all already been swallowed up by the darkness and she's left the figure out a route on her own.

She chooses a random hallway. They all look pretty much the same in the gloom. Her paw trembles as she holds her torch out in front of her, but she does her best steady herslf.

As she glides through the hall, she keeps her eyes trained ahead of her, searching for doorways or other halls that might lead to their goal. At first, the flickering on the walls is subtle and she hardly notices. But the deeper she goes, the more obvious it becomes. It's as if someone's making shadow puppets with the light from her torch and she swears she can see distinct figures on the walls. She freezes. Quickly looking behind and around her, she confirms that she's alone. She waves her torch towards the wall and the shadows dissipate like any normal shadow would.

Shaking her head, she continues on, but the shapes on the wall are keeping pace with her, lingering just in her peripheral vision. Her paws shake harder. She reaches for her boomerang and grips it tightly with her free paw. She has to get out of here! She decides to roll Paws to see if she can make a quick escape. Dexterity wasn't exactly her best feature, but she hopes the adrenalin will help her pull through.

The shadows loom over Mochius...

Mochius rolls an 18 - 3, for a total of 15, succeeding!

But she's able to overcome her fear, or at least harness it and run like the wind! The shadows flash all around her, getting slightly more frenzied for a moment, before completely dissipating, leaving her alone in a calm hallway, safe and sound, for now...

Mochius slows down finally, her chest heaving as she tries to catch her breath. Looking around slowly, the flickering shadows seem to be gone. She lets out a shaky sigh of relief. Back to business!

She takes a long moment to examine the hallway. It's still eerily dark and she waves her torch around to try to pinpoint any landmarks in the gloom. The only thing she can spot is a door further down, the firelight glinting off the golden doorknob. With a sigh, she heads towards it. At least that meant she was making progress.

As she navigates the hall, however, she doesn't find herself getting any closer to the door. Narrowing her eyes, she speeds up, though she still doesn't seem to be closing in. "What's happening?" She murmurs to herself. Was this an illusion? More magical nonsense? Were the shadow creatures toying with her now? Her paws start to shake again. What should she do?

She decides to roll Nose. Maybe she can puzzle out if there's a trick to this door, and see if it's worth trying to reach or not.
